As a homeowner, you’ve surely had some kind of plumbing problem. Not all plumbing issues are beyond the scope of the average homeowner, and you can do some work yourself.

When you are able to fix the small stuff on your own, it will deepen the satisfaction of owning your own home and being able to take care of things on your own. You want your house to be comfortable and in great working order, and taking care of the small stuff yourself will save you money in the long run. Stay on top of them though, as the small problems can become quite big with little warning, and then you will most certainly need the help of a plumber in Salt Lake City.

Small problems such as clogged drains or leaky faucets are easy to handle though. And don’t forget about that toilet that is always running! Not only will fixing these problems help your house work better, it will save you money. A running toilet will waste more water than you think. Be smart about the environment and your pocketbook and handle these small leaks when they arise. You’ll be happy about it and your house will be much better off.

The location and ease of access to your pipes will determine whether you can do the work on them in a lot of the cases. Pipes in your bathrooms or kitchen are generally easy to get to and that makes working on them a little bit easier. You will save yourself tons of money by trying to fix these little problems yourself. If you don’t have the knowledge to fix the problems, maybe get a do-it-yourself handbook and give it a read over.

Here is an article with some common plumbing problems and how to address them yourself. We’re even featured in the article talking about leaking water heaters.

However, if you don’t have the knowledge or interest in fixing some common plumbing issues yourself, don’t be afraid to call in the professionals. Our Salt Lake City plumbers will help with your small or large plumbing needs and they will do it with professionalism and in a timely manner.

The small stuff are the things that will save you money. While buying a brand new shower or bathroom sink is quite expensive, the small fittings and such that wear down are not terribly expensive and these are the things that will need to be replaced for the long life of your expensive purchases. A lot of times a worn O-ring or washer will be the reason something is leaking. It is much easier to replace this worn O-ring than it is to purchase a whole new sink and have it installed. The O-ring generally shouldn’t be that difficult to get to and you should need a minimal amount of tools to fix it. Just make sure beforehand that you have the tools and experience to tackle the task.

Before you start any plumbing projects, make sure you have what you need before you begin. This can be as simple as turning off the water to the pipes you are going to be working on. Know what you are looking for and what the problem can be. If you have a clogged drain, know that the problem can be in a number of places, but it is most likely going to be near the source of intake. If you have a clog in your bathtub or shower for instance, it is unlikely that the clog is due to an elbow in the piping, but more likely a build-up of your grime and gunk. Hair and soap can get caught up in your pipes and create a clog that while frustrating, should be within your scope of knowledge to fix. If you aren’t comfortable, one of our plumbers will help you with your clog or any problem.

Best wishes on your do-it-yourself plumbing endeavors!
