A big part of the role of any plumber involves repairs for various issues involving the sink, and it’s no different for our team at Expert Services- Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electrical. We can help with leaks and cracks, and also with remodeling and new sink installation.
For any of these areas, an understanding of how the sink was mounted can be important. There are several different popular mounting styles – let’s look at each briefly.
Under Mounting
Under mounting is a style where the sink attaches to the bottom of a countertop, offering a seamless appearance to the kitchen or bathroom. There’s no lip, meaning food can be wiped directly into the sink. The sink is generally anchored by a combination of epoxy, silicone and metal. Stainless steel is the most common fabrication material, though some are made with cast iron, copper or acrylic.
Top Mounting
Top mounting, or drop-in sinks, are the most common type. The mount installs from above – a hole is cut in the counter material and the sink is dropped in from above. The rim is caulked with silicon. Drop-in sinks are great for do-it-yourself repairs, though their rims prevent you from sweeping items directly from the counter into the sink.
Vessel Sinks
Vessel sinks are similar to top mounting sinks, but without the large hole in the counter – they simply rest on the surface of a countertop, supported by an applicable base. This eliminates the need for a big hole, and only a small drain hole is required. These are often cutting edge designs mostly used for aesthetics.
Pedestal Sinks
A pedestal sink refers to a sink that stands alone, on a thin column of porcelain or other material. They’re often found in older bathrooms and similar areas, and can provide a classic look.
Apron Sinks
Apron sinks, also called farmhouse sinks, use a large apron that drops down the front. They’re the toughest to install due to cabinet modifications needed, and they’re most commonly made from cast iron and ceramic.
