Keeping Indoor Air Healthy During Winter

March 2nd, 2018

During winter months, airflow within a given home can often change. Colder outdoor temperatures mean you can’t open windows or bring as much fresh air into the home, meaning it’s a bit tougher to maintain air quality during this season.

At Expert Services- Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electrical, we’re here to help. Our heating and air services include all your basic troubleshooting items, and among these is ensuring that your air quality stays as high as possible during the winter. Here are some basic tips you can follow to help out from your end, as well.

Changing Filters

This is a task that should be on your list throughout the year, but it’s particularly important during the winter. Check and replace your furnace filters regularly – in the winter, you can do this even more frequently than the manufacturing guidelines suggest. This makes up for the additional time you and your pets spend indoors during the winter, and the hair and skin cells you shed that fill your filters up quickly.

Cleaning Air Passages

All the air in your home during winter comes through registers and vents, and you want to keep these well-maintained. You can use a want attachment on your vacuum in many cases, or a flexible duster.

If air quality is a regular concern in your home, consider professional duct cleaning as well. Dust can often build in the ducts where you can’t see it or reach it, but professionals can get it out.

Ceiling Fans

Make sure you don’t forget about cleaning ceiling fan blades – these collect major dust buildups. And while you’re messing with the fan, consider switching its turning direction to clockwise during the winter. This creates an updraft rather than the downdraft formed by the normal counter-clockwise flow, and this will help circulate warmer air around the room. You might even be able to set your thermostat a degree or two lower and decrease your energy costs.

Air Filtration System

If you have regular air quality issues, you might consider an air filtration system installation. This is a system that helps filter particles even further, and it can both make your air cleaner and raise your home’s heating efficiency levels.
