Primer on Ductless Air Conditioning Systems

August 14th, 2019

If you have an older air conditioning system in your home, this summer may have been a struggle for you at times. Older systems often lead to temperature imbalances between rooms, faulty thermostats, or duct and feeding systems that are worn down and leak valuable cool air.

Our air conditioning repair and installation services are second to none, with pros who will work with you to find cost-effective repairs – and recommend the highest-quality replacements if moving to a new system is the prudent choice. One such modern system that might be right for your home: A ductless AC installation, also called a mini-split system. Here’s a primer on what this is and how it might benefit you.

Ease of Installation

A ductless AC system is one where several wall-mounted indoor units are placed in any number of rooms you desire within the home. These units are then connected to a single outdoor compressor, which powers each of them individually.
For air conditioning pros like ours, this makes installation extremely simple and affordable. These units are small and easy to work with, and can be installed in virtually any room with nothing but a small hole drilled in the wall. Once they’re working, they operate in virtual silence, meaning you won’t even notice them doing the job of cooling your home.

Full Temperature Control

Because each room in the home can be outfitted with its own indoor unit, you have full control over independent temperature areas throughout the space. You can adjust certain rooms to be warmer or cooler than others, perfect for a home where some family members prefer things differently than others. This also saves energy in many cases.

Efficiency Upgrades

On top of efficiency gained from whole-home temperature control, these units also utilize no specific ducting – an underplayed source of energy loss in traditional systems. Ducts often pull out nearly a quarter of the energy being passed around through the AC system, but this is not a concern at all with a ductless system. In addition, ductless systems have compressors that don’t shut down during unused periods, another energy-waster in traditional systems.

Home Additions

If you’re making additions or renovations to a current home that already has a duct system, you can save some significant costs by using ductless options for the new areas. Connecting new air ducts to an existing system is often a costly and high-hassle process, but ductless systems can be installed selectively in new rooms without messing with the system’s foundation at all.

Small-Duct Alternatives

For a middling option here, you can also consider a small-duct system. This is a build featuring a small tubing system, one capable of sitting under floors or inside walls. This system takes up about a third of the space of typical AC systems, but is extremely powerful while also operating quietly.
