Saving Water Around the Home

July 15th, 2017

The summer in Utah is fast approaching, and in this desert environment, that means dryness becomes a significant consideration. Conserving water is important throughout the year, but it takes on an even greater significance during these hottest months.

At Expert Services- Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electrical, our plumbers are here to help you with water conservation where they can. There are several home plumbing-related habits you can get into that will help save water, particularly at this time of year. Let’s look at a few of the ways you can go about this.

Laundry Machine

The laundry machine uses some of the most water of any individual appliance in your home, and keeping it well maintained is important – not only for water conservation, but also to keep it running properly long term. Do a visual inspection now and then, just to ensure there are no leaks or visible issues. Pay specific attention to the rubber hose, which generally has a shelf life of about three years. If it’s been longer than that or you see any signs of wear, consider a replacement.

Lawn Considerations

Watering the lawn is another major source of water usage, and many people can keep the same lawn quality while conserving significantly more water. Schedule watering for either just before sunrise or just after sundown – these times will limit evaporation, which is highest during the middle of the day.

Water Heater

If you are going on a summer vacation or even just leaving for the weekend, turn down your water heater while you’re away. This will save energy, and there’s really no reason for leaving it on at the same level. Just remember to turn it back up when you get home.

Trees

Trees near water lines in the yard may cause roots to make their way into the line in search of water. Make sure you’re careful about any planting or new water line services done.

Updated Appliances

Many older appliances use far more water than their newer equivalents, which both ruins your conservation efforts and costs you money in the long run due to water costs. Consider replacing older items with newer ones that will bring you a major profit over time.
